Make Architects integrates physical models into its design process via a dedicated modelshop with three professional modelmakers. Equipped with digital tools (3D printers, CNC) and a traditional workshop, the space supports collaborative model building involving architects and modelmakers.
Using diverse materials and processes, the modelshop crafts everything from quick foam sketches and full-scale mock-ups to detailed design development models, final presentation pieces, gifts, and marketing models.
While the modelmakers handle most construction, all Make staff receive training on basic tools (assembly space, hand tools, foam cutters) for independent sketch modelling, embodying Make's 'learning through making' philosophy.
Beyond internal projects, the modelshop accepts client commissions for public consultations, planning applications, and marketing models. Models offer unique spatial understanding, providing a tangible way to explore designs. They effectively communicate complex principles visually to clients, collaborators, and the public. The hands-on process also sparks creativity, leading to new design possibilities and solutions.
