Practice Statement

Model making is essential to our studio’s design process. At OMI, we create models at every stage of design development to explore and communicate massing, spatial relationships, and materiality. These physical models provide a three-dimensional understanding of form, scale, and proportion, fostering intuitive decision-making and deeper engagement with our concepts.

Our approach emphasises the tactile and iterative nature of model making. In the early stages, sketch models quickly test design ideas and spatial concepts. As designs progress, we create more detailed models to refine concepts and examine materiality, light, and shadow. At all stages models are valuable tools for discussion within our team and with clients, consultants, and stakeholders.

Beyond functionality, our models reflect our commitment to craftsmanship, seen in our built projects. They bridge the gap between abstract ideas and built reality, ensuring designs remain grounded and contextually responsive.

In an age of digital tools and AI, model making remains irreplaceable in conveying emotion, engaging the senses, and revealing insights that drawings and renderings alone cannot. It is an integral process that enhances both the creativity and clarity of our architectural approach.
