Practice Statement

At Morris+Company, modelmaking is a core aspect of our design process, bridging between digital and analogue techniques. We use a wide range of materials and tools, including a laser cutter, foam cutters, 3D printer, and traditional hand tools like Japanese pull saws and chisels. Our workshop also includes a spray booth, casting workshop, and photographic studio.

Models are an essential means of exploration, allowing us to experiment with form, materials, and scale. We craft layered paper models for precision, foam cutting for massing studies, and casting for larger-scale elements such as bay models and architectural details. For us, paper and card are more than materials; they are the language through which we communicate design, offering a tactile means of expression.

Models are predominantly made by architects and assistants, fostering direct engagement with the design process. For intricate models, we collaborate with our in-house modelmaker, and for large-scale or specialised models, we partner with external specialists. This blend of internal and external expertise reflects our collaborative approach, ensuring both innovation and craftsmanship in every project.
